The Unbudgingly Type: Resistance to Change

Updated: Sep 1

Resistance to change...what is all the hype about?

As human beings we tend to resist a lot of things 24 hours a day. We can resist our bosses’ requests or expectations, our partner’s requests all the way down to resisting change in the type of clothes we wear or our hairstyles etc... You get the idea here, right? But what is it about change that people dread so much? Are there any specific reasons to be resistant?

Some people dread change because it makes them feel uncomfortable as if inside of them it causes a stir of uncertainty, anxiety, or even stress. Some people dread change because it starts to take them away from their comfort zone (the way they have always done things/habitual tendencies).

Keep your mind open and know that no human being can change you; only you can do that. And if someone is attempting to change you, what exactly are they requesting? Is their request on the grounds of something that will cause you harm or harm to others, or breaking the law? Then yes, of course you should decline doing something like that. And, of course, you may have already taken some steps regarding your resistance to change, which is great! But if these steps are not working for you or have never worked for you then look at yourself in the mirror and stop the punching bag effect. By that I mean stop being repeatedly negative internally and see your complete self for a change. Once you see this, hopefully a clearer picture will present itself. If being resistant to change has your life in a funky place, try to comprehend why it is that way and whether you WANT to break away from it and start over; start fresh. Allow yourself to take on new challenges even if it means taking baby steps.

It might be helpful to start a brainstorming list of things you feel you are resistant and then go back to the beginning of the list and beside each item list a reason(s). Once done, review what you have produced and assess it for any duplication or trends, a pattern of sorts. Are there any areas that seem to pop out more than others? Start with those first and try to create a solution of resolve.
