Self-esteem is part of all of us and how much of a terrible thing it may be is only when an imbalance occurs. Look at it from this perspective, either you do not feel enough for yourself and who you are, or you feel too much of yourself which can be equally damaging not only to yourself but others around you.
People can fall victim to self-esteem issues every day of their lives and may not realize they are doing it and how often. When it becomes an ongoing process where you feel you cannot escape it then you should seek professional help.
For example, do you often compare yourself to others by the way they dress, what they do, how they look, the number of friends they have and the type of friends they have on a constant basis?
As a reference, Smith and Mackie (Social Psychology, 2007) indicates "The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it."
Trying to be like another person in characteristics or clothing and more, is not being you. With self-esteem also comes confidence. You must have confidence in the good things about yourself and your interests. Remember it is not about the other people; and it helps you to consider that you may not have any idea what their real-life might be like and situations they may be dealing with as well. The grass is not always greener on their side. Neither is trying to fit in with a certain crowd as a sort of cure or support for self-esteem and or confidence.
However, if you feel your self-esteem is out of control then talk with a mental health professional or get with your primary doctor to help you figure out what you may need so that you can start to feel better about yourself, who you are and about your life.
Love yourself and the uniqueness of you- always!
