Self-esteem is not a terrible thing. It is part of our humane makeup and does not become an issue typically until you start to develop an imbalance. Either you do not feel good enough about yourself and who you are, or you feel too much of yourself which can be equally damaging not only to yourself but others around you. There are times in life when people may fall victim to self-esteem that affect every day of their lives, and they may not realize they are in that sort of holding. When it becomes an ongoing process where you feel you cannot escape it, then you need professional help.
For example, do you often compare yourself to others by the way they dress, what they do, how they look, the number of friends they have and type of friends they have?
Smith and Mackie (Social Psychology, 2007) indicate "The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it."
Trying to be like another person in characteristics, clothing and more is not being you. With self-esteem also comes confidence. You must have confidence in the good things about yourself and your interests as well accepting of things you cannot change. Remember it is not about the other people; and keeping a perspective on this that you have no idea what their real-life may be like and things they may be dealing with as well. The grass is not always greener on their side. Trying to fit in with a certain crowd is not a cure for self-esteem or confidence either.
However, if you feel your self-esteem is out of control then talk with a mental health counsellor or get with your primary doctor to help you find what you may need so you can start to feel better about yourself, who you are and about your life.
Love yourself and the uniqueness of you.
